In response to our customers needs, Barcode400 now supports “smart labels” or Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Tags. Many users of Barcode400 are suppliers for Wal-Mart and were given a deadline last year to include RFID labels on all shipments by January 1, 2005.

Barcode400's RFID add-on allows “Smart Labels” to be "encoded" with data directly from the System i and printed to RFID thermal printers. In terms of generating the ‘Smart Labels,’ current users of Barcode400 will find the implementation of RFID technology as simple as adding new fields to an existing label format.
New users will realize the simplicity of label design, benefit from the ease of RFID integration, and realize the efficiency and ease of use for which our software and company have always been known.

Our customers are now able to meet RFID tag requirements based on the Electronic Product Code (EPC) standards set forth by the UCC (Uniform Code Council) and EAN (European Article Numbering) International. “Our software is designed to be flexible. The Barcode400 RFID Tag Module is designed to accommodate emerging standards as other organizations, be it in the retail industry or the Department of Defense, set down compliance standards for RFID tag technology,” says Mike Ash, President of T.L. Ashford.

Each label is embedded with a miniature chip and antenna. As the bar code label prints the chip is encoded with the Electronic Product Code (EPC) for RFID labels which is the equivalent of the Universal Product Code for barcodes. Barcode400 supports Class 1 and Class 0 RFID labels and is ready for Class1,Generation 2 EPC when the printers become available.
